About Dr. Kunes
Dr. Justin Kunes was born and raised in Aurora, Ohio, a community southeast of Cleveland. He was accepted into medical school at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine immediately following high school and completed his undergraduate training in just two years at Kent State University. He concurrently received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctor degrees in just six years. He realized after meeting one of his first pediatric orthopaedic mentors in Cincinnati, Ohio, that caring for children and their musculoskeletal differences was to be his path in life.
Dr. Kunes was accepted into Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Kentucky, in Lexington. He trained at the Shriners Hospital for Children there, and discovered a sense of fulfillment in caring for children with orthopaedic problems for the first time. Dr. Kunes developed an interest in the growing child. As the only Level I trauma center for a large geographic region, the University of Kentucky gave him the opportunity to hone his skills in the orthopaedic care of critically traumatized patients, including children.
To further define his career, Dr. Kunes completed two accredited fellowships: one in Pediatric Orthopaedics at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and the other in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education, in Tampa, Florida. He also completed an International Pediatric Orthopaedics fellowship in India as part of his fellowship in Cleveland.
Dr. Kunes enjoys treating all aspects of pediatric orthopaedics, but his career is focused on complex upper and lower extremity deformity correction. He especially enjoys treating congenital hand differences, brachial plexus palsies, and upper extremity sports injuries. He also treats clubfoot, congenital vertical talus, angular deformities about the knees and ankles, and limb-length differences.
For fun, Dr. Kunes enjoys cooking, traveling, running, biking, hiking, yoga, and Tai Chi.
