Practice History

Drs. E. William Schmitt and Peter L. Meehan have been prominent figures in Atlanta orthopaedics for more than two decades. Dr. Schmitt spent 22 years as the foundation for the Emory Clinic Pediatric orthopaedic program. Dr. Meehan worked with the world renowned Dr. Wood Lovell to establish the orthopaedics program at Scottish Rite Hospital.

In 1996, Drs. Schmitt and Meehan decided they could best serve the growing number of children in Atlanta through multiple locations, and thus Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates (POA) was founded. A strong academic and collegial tie is maintained with Emory as POA physicians serve as the primary teachers for pediatric orthopaedics to Emory University residents.

POA grew again in September 2002, with the addition of Timothy S. Oswald, M.D. Dr. Oswald trained at the premier pediatric orthopaedic fellowship program at the University of California, San Diego and brings special skills in minimally invasive spine surgery to the children of Atlanta.
