Pre-op instructions
On the night before surgery, your child should
have a bath or shower including shampooing the
hair.
Please arrive at the earliest time specified because
there is much to do before the surgery can take
place.
Your child is to have no solid food for 6 hours
prior to surgery. Clear fluids (apple juice, water,
breast milk, Gatorade, clear Popsicles, and clear
jello) may be consumed up to 4 hours before surgery.
Remember: orange juice, milk and formula are considered
to be solid foods.
A number of medication and nutritional supplements
should not be taken for 2 weeks before scheduled
surgery. The following is a list of compounds
to avoid before surgery as they can increase your
child’s bleeding or have adverse effects
on anesthesia.
Aspirin and other headache/pain relieving compounds
which contain aspirin
Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve
Dong Quai (Angelica)
Echinacea
Ephedra (Ma Huang, Ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine)
Garlic
Ginko biloba
Ginseng
Goldenseal
Kava Kava
Licorice
SAM-e (S-adenosyl-L-methionine)
St. John’s Wort
Valerian
